Helena van Tongeren started her viola lessons with Gert-Jan Leuverink. Since 1994 she studied with Jürgen Kussmaul at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam , obtaining her first degree in 1998 and her second degree in 2000.
She played principal viola in the Netherlands Youth Orchestra. Helena van Tongeren took master classes with Thomas Riebl in the United Kingdom among others. Several times she played on authentic instruments the viola d'amore solos from the St. John's Passion by J.S. Bach in Belgium and the Netherlands . She regularly plays in several Dutch orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.
Helena van Tongeren is a regular soloist with orchestras in the Netherlands and plays chamber music concerts all over Europe , amongst others in the Dutch Baryton Trio and the Lucebert Trio. Besides being a performer Helena has committed herself the past years to teaching young children.
